What is cantilever racking?

Cantilever Rack

Cantilever racking is a highly customizable system designed to fit all manner of nonstandard and awkward items. They are easy to adjust to meet your specific needs, no matter the length, width, height, and weight capacity in question. Cantilever racks can be tailored for light retail use as well as for heavy duty stock requiring forklifts to move it off the floor.

Cantilever rack systems are unique in that they don’t create a defined space in which items are stored. On the contrary, cantilever racks are storage solutions designed to meet more unique storage requirements than pallet racks. Think about a wood rack rather than a defined container.

A cantilever rack system has a few different components to consider.

Upright columns

Vertical beams connected to cantilever bases, braces, and columns are known as upright columns, also called “cantilever uprights”, and are used as part of the foundation of the cantilever racking system and provide much of its stability. Vertical beams can be used in both single-sided and double-sided shelves.

Bases

The most important part of storage racks, regardless of their specific design, is the base. This is just as true in cantilever shelving as it is anywhere else. Bases form the foundation of shelving units and are responsible for supporting weight capacities of all kinds.  Whether you’re storing large quantities of industrial metal or plywood or commercial retail objects, the best way to build your cantilever shelf is to ensure its frame is stable and secure.

Arms

Cantilever systems use “arms” as levels upon which materials rest. These arm levels can vary widely in their width and spacing as well as their strength. Weight capacity varies to match the objects being stored, with furniture, like a cabinet, and equipment requiring much more room and stability than small carts.

Wire decking

Wire decking is not always part of cantilever systems, but sometimes serves as wire shelves. They are a common sight in warehouses, in particular, and often form the base of cantilever arms.

Braces

Upright columns are connected by braces. This ensures that the product has enhanced horizontal and diagonal support and stability, making the overall cantilever system much more secure.

Cantilever racking – materials stored

Some of the most important elements of cantilever racks are the items stored within them. Since cantilever rack systems do not have defined lengths, they can be used to store items with many different weight capacities. They are an ideal storage option for:

  • Boats
  • Furniture
  • Metal
  • Lumber
  • Drywall
  • Sheet rock

Note that this is just a small list, and cantilever racking can often be tailored to suit any number of items.

Cantilever shelving: pros and cons

What makes a cantilever shelving system better than pallet racking systems? In addition to the variety of styles and accessories available, here are some of the reasons people tend to love cantilever shelving (as well as some of the reasons why they don’t).

Pros

Cantilever shelves are the ideal storage type for awkward and nonstandard loads. They are ideal for a large store or business, but can also be used in smaller warehouse spaces. Their open fronts are great for forklift retrieval, too, making loading, unloading, and shipping quick and easy. The system is highly expandable, too, and can be scaled as your needs require.

Cons

One of the few downsides of cantilever racking is cost. The price of industrial shelving can be steep, especially when the shelf in question is custom-designed to suit your needs. New Era is happy to provide you with an accurate quote upfront so you know what to expect.

Cantilever systems are excellent for many categories of businesses. Whether you deal with material handling, ship and store large objects, or are in need of a great deal of storage capacity, cantilever racks might be your storage and organization solution.
